Visit the quiet morning sanctuary and take in panoramic views of Kamakura's streets from the Great Stone Staircase

About this spot

The symbol of Kamakura, associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo. Progress along the approach lined with Dankazura (段葛), then ascend the Great Stone Staircase to be greeted by the vermillion-lacquered main hall. Looking back, the vista stretches beyond Wakamiyadoji Street to Yuigahama Beach (由比ヶ浜)—a view not to be missed. The grounds offer many points of interest including the Gempei Pond (源平池) and dancing stage (舞殿). Morning worship in the crisp air cleanses the spirit.

Tips

The main hall is reached via 61 stone steps. Ema plaques can be obtained at the issuing office beside the main hall. Early morning hours are ideal for photography at the Dankazura and dancing stage, as fewer people appear in photos.

Best time to visit

Allow 1.5 hours; early morning right after opening is the least crowded
