About this spot
A historic district representative of Kanazawa, where the mansions of Kaga clan samurai once stood in succession. Ochre-colored clay walls and winding stone-paved lanes, combined with the gentle murmur of the Ohno Shō irrigation canal flowing alongside, create an atmosphere as if the feudal era remains frozen in time. The area is dotted with viewing spots such as the Kanazawa Ashigaru (Foot Soldier) Museum, which chronicles the lives of common soldiers and is free to enter. In winter, protective straw matting called "komo-gake" is applied to the clay walls, and the district's character changes with each season.
Tips
Strolling itself is free. Before 9 a.m., there are fewer tourists, making it an ideal time to photograph the lanes. Stone pavements are slippery when wet, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking around the area is limited; using coin parking in the Kōrinbō area or public transportation is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early morning is quietest and best for photographing the townscape.
