Admire the celebrated garden with water reaching the veranda and enjoy matcha tea in the tea room

About this spot

The only samurai residence in Nagamachi open to the public, this is the former mansion of the Nomura family, who served in important positions for generations in the Kaga clan. The highlight is undoubtedly the garden where a meandering stream flows close to the wooden veranda. The landscape, with golden carp swimming in the water, stone lanterns, and mature trees weaving together their beauty, has been highly praised in international garden design journals. The formal chambers, including the upper ceremonial room and audience hall with their all-hinoki cypress construction, are equally impressive. On the second floor, a tea room offers views of the garden while you enjoy matcha.

Tips

Matcha is an additional charge beyond admission. The interior has tatami flooring and stairs; wearing easy-to-remove shoes makes navigation smooth. Morning hours see fewer group visitors, allowing you to leisurely view the garden from the veranda. Commemorative stamps and a gift shop are available.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Morning light beautifully illuminates the garden's water surface.
