A Nichiren Buddhist temple commonly called the "Ninja Temple," built during the reign of Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of the Kaga clan. Though it appears to be a two-story structure from the outside, the interior is a complex multi-layered maze. Hidden throughout are ingenious mechanisms including a donation box that doubles as a trapdoor, secret staircases, and overhead openings that serve as lookout vents for emergencies. Following a guide through the tour—discovering each clever device one by one—feels like solving a mystery. This is the climax of your course, where you can experience the temple's role as a defensive stronghold within the castle town's temple district.
Tips
Admission is by advance reservation (by phone) with a guided tour lasting approximately 40 minutes. Last-minute accommodations may be available if space allows, but advance booking is recommended. The building has many steep staircases, so wear comfortable shoes. Young children cannot enter, making this ideal for couples. It's about a 5-minute walk from Nishi Chaya Street.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes (including reception). Afternoon tours are relatively easier to book.
