View a uniquely distinctive architecture with layered stone and glass arches

About this spot

A church featuring rare organic architecture with multiple layering stone and glass arches—extraordinary even by world standards. Designed by American architect Kendrick Kellogg, the stone symbolizes masculinity and glass symbolizes femininity, with the entire structure blending harmoniously into the forest slope. Light filters through the arches, and the sound of flowing water echoes through the sanctuary, creating a solemn atmosphere that leaves visitors speechless. The basement houses a memorial hall displaying materials about Uchimura Kanzo, offering a quiet, moving conclusion to your day.

Tips

Located just a short drive from Karuizawa Kogen Church and near the Hoshino area. Interior photography is not permitted, so take time to capture the exterior thoroughly. Services may restrict viewing, so follow the entrance guidance or adjust your timing. Admission is free, and the forest walking path has some elevation changes, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. The soft light of early evening beautifully illuminates the stone arches.
