About this spot
A scenic landmark representing Kamikōchi, created when the Azusa River was dammed by the eruption of Mount Yake in the Taisho era. The unique landscape of dead standing trees jutting from the water surface becomes even more fantastical when shrouded in morning mist. On calm mornings, the pond becomes a mirror, and the Hotaka and Yake mountain ranges are sharply reflected. The standard hiking route from here descends toward Kappa Bridge, so you get the best panoramic view right from the start.
Tips
Kamikōchi has year-round car restrictions. Transfer from parking at Sawando or Hirayu to the shuttle bus or taxi, and get off at Taisho Pond bus stop. The earlier you arrive, the calmer the water surface and the better for photography. There is a restroom at the trailhead.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Best between early morning and 9 AM when morning mist and water mirror reflections are visible.
