About this spot
A relief honoring Walter Weston, a British missionary praised as the father of modern mountaineering, who introduced the beauty of the Japanese Alps to the world through his writings. Located on the quiet left bank of the Azusa River, with a grand view of Mount Kasumisawa and Roppakunzan across the river. This spot is the origin of Kamikōchi becoming a world-renowned mountain resort, where you can experience a chapter of mountain history. The riverside with a bench is perfect for a short break.
Tips
Cross Tashiro Bridge and turn left to head along the left bank—it's nearby. In front of the monument is a small plaza with almost no queue for photos. You can continue toward Kappa Bridge along the left bank trail.
Best time to visit
Approximately 20 minutes. Few visitors before noon, allowing for quiet viewing.
