Pay Your Respects at the Shrine Guardian and Pray for Safe Travels

About this spot

The tutelary shrine of Narai-juku post town, located at the Kyoto-facing end of the street. According to local tradition, it was originally enshrined to calm epidemics and has long watched over the safety of travelers. The grounds, surrounded by cedar groves, are surprisingly peaceful despite the bustling post town just beyond, and you can deeply feel the mountain depths of the Kiso Road. It makes an ideal turning point for your post-town stroll.

Tips

Located at the end of the street after walking south through Narai-juku, easily accessible on foot. The grounds have stone steps and gravel paths, so it's best to leave a baby carriage at the entrance. As it's a quiet sacred space, please respect shrine etiquette.

Best time to visit
