A museum and restored checkpoint facility that recreates the historical Niekawa Checkpoint, which guarded the northern entrance to the Kiso Road. Beyond inspecting traveling merchants on the Nakasendo, it was particularly known for 'shiraki aratame' (white wood inspection), monitoring the export of Kiso cypress and other lumber, the region's prized commodities. Inside, you can closely examine materials related to checkpoint operations and travel permits, bringing the reality of Edo-period travel to life. This spot offers another facet of Kiso Road history, creating an interesting contrast with the bustling Narai-juku.
Tips
Just a short walk from Niekawa Station, one station north by JR from Narai Station; approximately 15 minutes by car via Route 19. Winter closures occur, so confirm opening status in advance. The building is traditional wooden construction, so children should watch for step height differences.
