Buy a ticket at the gateway to the Alpine Route and board an electric bus to begin your journey through the tunnel
About this spot
The starting point on the Nagano side of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. From here, transfer to an electric bus that travels through the Kanden Tunnel, passing through the mountain in about 16 minutes to reach Kurobe Dam. Partway through the tunnel is a section lit in blue that indicates the Fractured Zone (破砕帯), the greatest challenge during construction. Combined with the in-vehicle announcements, this thrills the hearts of vehicle enthusiasts. The station has a shop and light snack corner where you can enjoy some time before departure.
Tips
The parking lots around the station have both paid and free options, and during busy seasons they fill up early, so arriving early is recommended. Since buses run on a fixed schedule, be sure to check the return bus times in advance to make it easier to plan your day. Even in the height of summer, the mountains are cool, so don't forget a light jacket or sweater.
Best time to visit
About 30 minutes. The first bus of the morning is relatively uncrowded, making it easier to get a window seat.
