Walk across the embankment of Japan's tallest arched dam and enjoy Kurobe Dam Curry for lunch at the rest house
About this spot
An arched dam boasting a height of 186 meters, Japan's tallest. As you exit the electric bus and emerge from the tunnel, the grand arc of the embankment and deep valley spread out before you. The embankment, which stretches about 492 meters, can be crossed on foot, and the view down into the valley from the railing is spectacular. During the summer to autumn spillway season, more than 10 tons of water per second spray like mist, and on clear days, a rainbow often forms. At the rest house, the famous Kurobe Dam Curry—with the embankment recreated in rice—awaits you.
Tips
At an elevation of about 1,470 meters, it's cool and refreshing even in the height of summer, so a light jacket is recommended. The area has many stairs and slopes, making baby carriers more suitable than strollers. The rest house gets crowded around lunchtime, so having lunch early or adjusting your timing is recommended. At the spillway viewing area, water spray may reach you, so a towel is handy.
Best time to visit
About 2 hours 20 minutes. In the morning, backlighting is minimal and rainbows from the spillway are easier to spot.
