One of the largest gassho-style houses in the Ogimachi settlement, designated as a nationally important cultural property. The Wada family served as village headmen and administrative officials during the Edo period, prospering through trade in saltpeter, an ingredient for gunpowder. While still functioning as a residence, the first and second floors are partially open to the public. Massive beams interlocking in the roof structure and numerous tools used for sericulture convey the wisdom of people who lived in the deep snows of Shirakawa-go—a must-see for history enthusiasts.

Tips

Admission is approximately 400 yen for adults. Inside stairs are steep, so hold small children's hands and ascend slowly. Located along the settlement's main street, easily accessible after lunch. The exterior view photographed over the surrounding rice fields is a classic shot.
