Ascend to 2,156 Meters in a Two-Story Gondola and Behold the Vast Panorama of the Northern Alps

About this spot

The symbol of Oku-Hida, where you transfer between two ropeway lines to ascend in one go to Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station at 2,156 meters elevation. The second ropeway is Japan's only two-story gondola, and children are thrilled by the mountain scenery spreading out through the glass. From the mountaintop observation deck, you can see the peaks of the Northern Alps including Nishi-Hotakadake, Yarigatake, and Kasagadake, and on clear days, you may even see a sea of clouds below. The Sengoku Park area around the station has walking paths through primeval forest, where you can enjoy a cool cloud-top stroll even in the height of summer.

Tips

Even in midsummer, the mountain top is chilly at around 15 degrees Celsius, so don't forget jackets for the whole family. Since there are stairs to the observation deck, a baby carrier is safer than a stroller. During holidays and fall foliage season, both the parking lot and gondola get crowded, so the earliest morning is most comfortable. Since operating conditions depend on the weather on the day, it's wise to check beforehand.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2.5 hours. Late morning is the best time for clear views.
