Mini-Hike as a Family to the 64-Meter-Tall Waterfall and Feel the Cool Mist
About this spot
A famous waterfall of Hida with a drop of approximately 64 meters and width of approximately 6 meters, selected as one of Japan's 100 Finest Waterfalls. The walking trail from the parking lot to the waterfall viewing spot is about 15 minutes, a perfectly manageable mini-hike even for children. As you approach, the sound of water grows louder, and standing before the falls, cool mist reaches your face. In spring and autumn foliage seasons, the entire valley is painted with color, and in winter it's known for ice falls as well—a scenic spot in Oku-Hida that changes appearance with the seasons.
Tips
The parking lot to the waterfall is a gentle uphill slope, so a baby carrier is recommended over a stroller. Even in midsummer, it's cool near the waterfall, so a light jacket is helpful. Have small change ready for the parking fee. It's easier to move around if you have lunch in the Hirayu Onsen area before heading to the falls.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Afternoon light shines into the valley, making the waterfall look beautiful.
