Reach the Summit of Japan's Lowest Mountain at 4.53 Meters Elevation and Take a Family Photo

About this spot

A verdant park spreading along the harbor just north of the Ferris Wheel, home to "Tenpōzan," famous as "Japan's lowest mountain" with an elevation of 4.53 meters. A second-class triangulation benchmark is positioned at the summit. The ascent requires only a few steps, allowing even small children to achieve the accomplishment of climbing the mountain themselves, and taking a commemorative family photo at the summit marker is the classic way to enjoy this spot. Built during the Tenpō era in the Edo period from dredged soil from the Aji River, it carries historical significance, and a monument marking the site where the Meiji Emperor reviewed the navy stands in the park. The harborside promenade offers a leisurely view of passing ships, making it a perfect quiet spot to wrap up your day with an evening stroll.

Tips

Just a few minutes' walk from the Kaiyū-kan and Ferris Wheel, with free admission. The second-class triangulation benchmark at the summit is small and easily overlooked, so searching for it with children can be fun. A completion certificate issued by the surrounding "Tenpōzan Mountaineering Society" merchant association makes a nice souvenir. The park is flat and stroller-friendly, but with limited restroom and refreshment facilities, it's best to use the facilities at the Marketplace before heading over.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 45 minutes. Late afternoon, when the harbor is bathed in sunset colors, is perfect for ending your day.
