A long-established shop at the gate of Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine, said to have been founded in 1682 (Tenna 2), which has dedicated itself exclusively to millet dumplings for over 300 years. Upon order, craftsmen skillfully hand-roll millet dough and finish it with two varieties—smooth red bean paste and soybean powder—resulting in freshly pounded millet dumplings with a subtle millet aroma and simple deliciousness. Order the set with both varieties of dumplings and complementary tea, and the gentle sweetness soothes the body after a day of World Heritage site exploration. The interior retains the ambiance of a traditional tea shop, and with chair seating, grandparents can sit comfortably without strain. The long-standing custom among Kyoto residents—"after praying at Tenjin, visit Sawaya for millet dumplings"—can be experienced by three generations as the perfect conclusion to your journey.
Tips
Located right next to the Kitano Tenman-gu-mae bus stop, just across the road from the shrine's great torii gate. The specialty is millet dumplings only, and the shop closes once they sell out, so visiting earlier in the evening rather than late is recommended. Note that the shop is closed on Thursdays and the 26th of each month. While takeout is available, the soft texture of freshly pounded dumplings is best enjoyed in the shop with tea.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. The 15 o'clock time slot after completing your shrine visit is recommended. Since the shop closes when sold out, avoid visiting too late in the day
