The "Kyoto Kitchen" with approximately 400 years of history. The arcade, approximately 390 meters from east to west, is lined with about 130 specialty shops supporting Kyoto's food culture—river fish, yuba (tofu skin), pickles, and dried goods. There's an abundance of gourmet fare to enjoy on the spot, such as dashi rolled eggs, soy milk donuts, and freshly grilled fish cakes. The fun way to experience the market is to sample a little of each while sharing with friends. The colorful stained-glass-style ceiling of the arcade keeps you dry even on rainy days and is perfect for photos. As you venture deeper, new discoveries await, and before you know it, two hours have passed. If you pick up Kyoto pickles and dried goods as souvenirs, the taste of Kyoto will linger even after you return home.

Tips

About a 4-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station and Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Line, and very close to Shijo Station on the Karasuma Line. Eating while walking is prohibited—enjoy your purchases at the shop front or in designated eating areas to be respectful. Many small shops are cash-only, so be sure to have small change on hand. Since it gets very crowded after noon, starting your tour around 10:30–11 a.m. when shops open is recommended. Some shops are closed on Wednesdays.
