At a shrine nestled at the eastern end of the market, everyone can try the mechanical fortune telling
About this spot
Located at the eastern end of Nishiki Market on Shin-Kyogoku Street, this shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship and business prosperity. The unique sight of the torii gates piercing into the buildings on both sides occurred because structures were built above the approach after the gate was erected—it's a famous landmark. Free sacred water called "Nishiki no Mizu" can be drawn from the precincts, and the many paper lanterns hanging in the grounds become softly illuminated in the evening, creating a wonderfully atmospheric space. The highlight is the "mechanical fortune telling" where a lion-dance automaton delivers your fortune slip. When you insert a coin and the lion dances while delivering your fortune, everyone's sure to cheer. It's perfectly positioned for a closing prayer after your food-walking adventure.
Tips
It's at the eastern end of the Nishiki Market arcade, facing Shin-Kyogoku Street. Admission is free, and the famous mechanical fortune telling uses coins, so have small change ready for a smooth experience. The precincts are compact, so be considerate of others during crowded times. The torii gate piercing into the buildings is easiest to see from outside the precincts when looking up—it's a classic photo spot.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. Visit in the afternoon as a closing prayer to your food walking. The precincts are also atmospheric in the early evening when the lanterns light up.
