End your day of food walking with the signature kuzu-kiri (kudzu noodles) made fresh to order
About this spot
A confectionery shop from Gion, said to have been founded during the Edo period's Kyoho era, and a must-know establishment for anyone who loves Kyoto's sweets. The signature kuzu-kiri is made with such dedication that it's kneaded fresh to order from Yoshino-hon-kuzu (premium arrowroot), then served in a lacquerware bowl floating in iced water. You dip the transparent kuzu noodles in black honey before eating. The delicate, smooth texture as it glides down your throat is so refined that it slips down easily even on a full stomach from food walking. The quiet tea room is surprisingly serene considering it's just a step away from the bustling Shijo Street, making it perfect for a closing moment to share your day's memories. At the shop counter, you can also purchase refined Kyoto souvenirs such as wa-sanbon dry confections called "Kiku-kotou."
Tips
About a 3-minute walk from Gojo Station on the Keihan Line, and also within walking distance of Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Line. Note that they're closed on Mondays (or the next day if Monday is a holiday). The tea room tends to fill up during afternoon snack time, so during busy periods you'll write your name at the shop entrance and wait. Since kuzu-kiri is made to order, there's a slight wait, but that wait time is part of the old-establishment charm. You can also use the shop for shopping only.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. There may be a wait between 2–4 p.m., so plan to visit with some time to spare.
