Leisurely stroll through the thatch-roofed village and enjoy a simple mountain lunch at a local restaurant

About this spot

Spreading across the northern settlement of Miyama Town in Nantan City, this mountain village embodies Japan's original landscape. Approximately 40 traditional thatched-roof houses where people still live today remain here, earning designation as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. As you leisurely walk along rice field paths and stone-paved trails, every view becomes a picture-perfect scene. The iconic red round mailbox set against a thatched roof is a classic photo spot. Scattered throughout the settlement are restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops where you can enjoy simple, rustic lunches made with local mountain ingredients. Exploration is entirely at your own pace, allowing you to wander at your child's speed. However, this is not a tourist facility but a living community. Taking time to stroll respectfully—staying out of fields and yards, speaking quietly—becomes a valuable learning experience for your child.

Tips

A tourist parking lot is located across from the settlement; by car, access is easy (public transport: Nantan City buses from Sonobe or Hiyoshi stations). The settlement has gravel roads and slopes; a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller. Restaurants are limited in number and can have wait times during lunch hours. Early lunch around 11 a.m. or eating before exploring offers more comfort. Remember this is a living community—teach children not to enter gardens or fields.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours. Morning light beautifully illuminates the roofs and green fields; early lunch around 11 a.m. is most comfortable
