Built around 1902 as the private residence of German merchant Gottfried Thomas, this Western mansion is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Its red-brick exterior and the weathervane on the spire are symbolic landmarks of the Kitano Ijinkan district. The interior is furnished throughout in the substantial German traditional style, with leisurely viewing opportunities of the drawing room, dining room, study, and children's rooms that retain their period character. Windows offer pleasant views of the sloped Kitano neighborhood, conveying the lifestyles of foreign families who lived in Meiji-era Kobe. The Kitano-cho Square in front of the building features benches and sculptures as a perfect photo spot, ideal for capturing commemorative photographs of you both with the mansion as a backdrop.

About a 15-minute walk up Kitano Slope from Sannomiya Station, or a short walk from the City Loop Bus stop at 'Kitano Ijinkan.'
