About this spot
Founded in 1933, this is one of Japan's most historic alpine botanical gardens. The cool climate at 865 meters elevation is equivalent to southern Hokkaido, hosting approximately 1,500 species of world alpine plants and cold-region flora in their natural state. The charm lies in seasonal changes—Water skunk cabbage in spring, Himalayan blue poppies and Japanese false hellebore in early summer, and autumn foliage transform the garden with new displays. Walking along wooden paths and narrow trails discovering small flowers at your feet feels like a treasure hunt, captivating children. Even in midsummer, it's significantly cooler than the city—an excellent spot to escape the heat. The park also features a shop and café for rest and refreshment while enjoying the flowers.
Tips
From Rokko Cable Summit Station, take Rokko Mountain Bus for approximately 13 minutes to 'Alpine Botanical Garden' stop. The park trails have gravel paths and slopes, so a carrier/hiking-friendly shoes are better than strollers. Check the official website for flower bloom updates before departure. Note: the garden closes for winter typically from late November to mid-March.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Morning hours when flowers are most vibrant and the air is coolest are best.
