About this spot

At a small park surrounded by trees, reached by climbing the slope of the hot spring town, you can view the carbonated spring source that inspired Arima's famous carbonated crackers. Beneath the pavilion, effervescent carbonated water bubbles up, and at the tasting area, you can sample naturally carbonated water with a slight fizz. There's an interesting historical note: this water was once feared as "poisoned water," but in the Meiji period it was identified as drinkable carbonated spring water and contributed to the origins of Japanese cider. Peering into the spring source with grandchildren or trying a taste creates a fun, impromptu science experiment atmosphere. Along the way on Yumoto Slope, shops selling carbonated crackers and tsukudani (preserved) dishes line the street, making snacking while walking the established custom.

Tips

A 7–8 minute walk uphill from Kin no Yu via Yumoto Slope, which is lined with carbonated cracker shops—a built-in snacking route. The slope and stone steps continue, so grandparents should use handrails and proceed slowly. The stone-paved slope is difficult for strollers, so carrying small children in a baby carrier is recommended. The carbonated water at the tasting area has a distinctive flavor, so adults should try it first.
