A 4-minute aerial journey to the summit with panoramic views of Himeji's cityscape and the Harima Strait below

About this spot

Shoshazan stands 371 meters tall, rising to the northwest of Himeji's downtown. The Shoshazan Ropeway connects the base to the summit in approximately 4 minutes. From the large gondola windows, you can take in sweeping views of Himeji's cityscape, the Harima Strait, and on clear days, even the Ieshima Islands beyond. The excitement of the journey builds the moment you board. Operating at roughly 15-minute intervals makes scheduling easy and convenient for day-trip planning with friends. Inside the cabin, a guide's commentary plays, explaining the history of Shoshazan and Engyoji Temple—and before you know it, you've arrived at the summit station. The vast panorama of the Banshū Plain spreading below is perfect for photos with your group, building anticipation for the temple pilgrimage to come.

Tips

From the north exit of JR Himeji Station, take Shinki Bus Line 8 (bound for Shoshazan Ropeway) for approximately 30 minutes to the terminal. By car, there is free parking in front of the base station. Although the ropeway operates at roughly 15-minute intervals, it may close during strong winds, so check the official website for daily operational information. Purchasing a round-trip ticket ensures a smooth return journey.

Best time to visit

Approximately 30 minutes required. Early morning departures around 9 AM are less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the magnificent views from the windows at a leisurely pace.
