About this spot
Founded by the venerable priest Shosho in 966 (Koho 3), this Tendai Buddhist temple is known as 'Hiei of the West.' It is the 27th station of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and attracts deep devotion as a sacred space. The Maniden Hall jutting from a cliff in stage-like architecture, the three main halls—the Great Lecture Hall, Refectory, and Constant Practice Hall—arranged in a U-shape among towering cedars create a truly awe-inspiring ensemble of sacred buildings. The temple gained further fame as a filming location for 'The Last Samurai' and various period dramas; the sight of the halls nestled within the forest feels as though you've stepped back in time. This is the perfect place to walk quietly along the approach path with friends and savor pilgrimage rituals and collecting temple stamps at leisure.
Tips
From the summit station of the ropeway, it is approximately 15–20 minutes on foot to the Maniden Hall along a mountain trail. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is essential. If you prefer to conserve energy, a paid microbus service runs from near the summit station to around the Maniden Hall. A donation (¥500) is requested upon entering the temple grounds, so bring small change for convenience. The interior of the halls has wooden floors and remains cool even in summer; bringing a light jacket or cardigan is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours required. Early morning hours keep the approach path quiet, allowing you to leisurely explore the halls bathed in filtered sunlight.
