Located within Tegarayama Central Park, this historic aquarium opened in 1966 (Showa 41). With the theme 'Rural areas and coastal waters of Harima,' it carefully introduces creatures living in the rivers and seas surrounding Himeji. The aquarium's symbol is a sea turtle gliding gracefully through the main tank; a touch tank lets you handle starfish and sea urchins; and tanks display the fish of the Harima Strait. While not large, the aquarium packs plenty of highlights into a compact space. The charming retro atmosphere remaining from the Showa era adds appeal—the nostalgia and cuteness will keep conversations with friends flowing. You can explore thoroughly in about 90 minutes, making it easy to include in your afternoon plans.
Tips
It's a 10-minute walk from Sanyo Electric Railway's Tegara Station, and also easily accessible from JR Himeji Station (one stop plus walk). Paid parking is available in the park. The museum is compact and easy to navigate. The adjacent Tegarayama Exchange Station displays a vintage Himeji monorail car—retro enthusiasts should definitely peek at it. The aquarium closes Tuesdays (or the following day if Tuesday is a holiday), so check in advance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes required. Visiting in the early afternoon allows for unhurried viewing and an easy transition to exploring the park.
