A traditional Naramachi machiya recreated as a viewing facility by the city of Nara, with the pleasant bonus of free admission. You can experientially walk through the entire structure—the characteristically narrow frontage and deep interior known as 'unagi no nedoko' (eel's sleeping place)—from the through-corridor, interior courtyard, box stairs, and up to the loft. The sight of light filtering through Nara lattice creating striped patterns on the earthen floor and tatami rooms is irresistibly photogenic. Climbing the steep box stairs to the second floor loft, you can look down at the Naramachi streets through the lattice windows, experiencing the gaze of past residents. Tips
About 20 minutes' walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, located on the southern side of the Naramachi walking route. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday). Free admission and no reservation needed; drop by anytime. Since you remove shoes on the tatami and loft, wearing slip-on shoes and bringing socks is convenient. The box stairs are steep, so use the handrail and ascend carefully.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes required. Morning light creates beautiful stripes on the earthen floor through the lattice, and there are fewer visitors.
