A cultural facility housed in a machiya built in Taisho 6 (1917) and subsequently renovated; admission is likewise free. The spacious earthen floor with its original stove, the sitting room facing the courtyard garden, a proper tea room, and even a storehouse—the entire atmosphere of a merchant's daily life has been preserved intact. The interior is dressed seasonally in accordance with the year's calendar of events, revealing different facets with each visit. Sitting side by side on the veranda and gazing at the garden as you catch your breath provides a small reward amid your lane wandering. While the Latticed House teaches you about 'machiya architecture,' this place lets you feel the 'machiya lifestyle.' Viewing both in succession brings the latticed houses lining Naramachi's lanes vividly to life.
Tips
About 5 minutes' walk from the Naramachi Latticed House, conveniently near Goryousan Shrine. Open 9 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Wednesdays; admission is free. Sitting areas and the tea room require removing shoes, so don't forget socks. Checking the official website in advance for seasonal décor and event dates will maximize the highlights. The surrounding streets are narrow and best explored on foot.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes required. Late morning is relatively quiet, allowing you to relax on the veranda without rush.
