Nestled in a corner of Naramachi, this is the town's tutelary shrine, affectionately known as 'Goryousan.' An ancient shrine enshrining eight deities including Princess Inoue from the Nara Period, it has recently become known for its efficacy in matters of good fortune and romantic connections, drawing couples and young visitors. At the guardian lion statues before the main hall, there is a tradition of tying strings around the lions' feet and making a wish to 'tie down' one's bond with a beloved—the accumulated wishes of those seeking to preserve connections with special people are woven throughout. The treasure office's charming omamori (amulets) and goshuin (shrine stamps) are popular, and selecting them together is part of the fun. The compact, tree-shrouded grounds are peaceful and quiet, offering the serene atmosphere unique to a neighborhood shrine, quite different from bustling tourist sites.

Tips

Just a short walk from Naramachi Nigiwai-no-ie and easily incorporated into your Naramachi stroll. Admission is free. Bring small coins for offerings and fortunes. Check with the treasure office about the proper method for the lion feet-tying wish before making it. The compact grounds pair well with lunch at a nearby machiya café.
