A 6-Minute Aerial Journey to the Mountain Summit with a Grand Panorama of the Yamato Basin Below
About this spot
The starting station of the Katsuragi Mountain Ropeway operated by the Kintetsu Group, whisking passengers up to near the 959-meter summit of Yamato Katsuragi Mountain in roughly 6 minutes. As the gondola gains altitude, farmland and cityscapes of the Yamato Basin spread below, with distant mountain ranges coming into view—this aerial walk is a signature section that thrills from the very start of your hike. By skipping the 2-3 hour climb on foot, you have plenty of time to enjoy highland hiking at the summit. During spring azalea season, long queues form at the station, and the mountain's seasonal coloring visible from the cable car window is a unique charm of this route.
Tips
From Kintetsu Gojo Station (近鉄御所駅), take a bus bound for Katsuragi Ropeway Mae (葛城ロープウェイ前) for approximately 20 minutes; by car, use the paid parking lot around the trailhead station. During mid-May azalea peak season, expect long waits of several hours from early morning, so the golden rule is to arrive early for the first departing car. Purchasing round-trip tickets in advance streamlines the return descent.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. During azalea season, the first cars after opening are less crowded and comfortable; in regular season, early morning departures are also uncrowded.
