About this spot
Standing at 959 meters on the border of Nara and Osaka Prefectures, this mountain features gentle highlands spreading across its summit area, boasting one of the Kansai region's most pleasant hiking fields. From the ropeway's mountain station to the summit is a 20-30 minute walk along the trail. From the unobstructed summit, a grand panorama awaits, stretching from the Yamato Basin to Mount Kongō, and on clear days, the Osaka Plain. The highlight is mid-May when the mountainside turns crimson with the massive Yamayotsutsuji azalea grove known as "One Million Blooms at a Glance." In autumn, the entire slope of Japanese pampas grass waves silver, offering completely different seasonal views. As a junction point on the Diamond Trail ridge walk continuing to Mount Kongō, hiking enthusiasts will find invigorating highland walking with lively conversation.
Tips
From the mountain station to the summit and azalea gardens, signage is well-maintained and navigation is straightforward, though the soil paths become muddy after rain—trekking shoes are recommended. The elevation means the temperature feels noticeably cooler than the base, so bring a light layer even in summer. There are virtually no shops along the trail, so secure drinks before boarding.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours. Clear morning air provides excellent views, and mid-May is peak azalea season.
