Considered the head shrine of all Kamo and Kaga shrines across Japan, this is one of Japan's oldest shrines by history. This area is said to be the birthplace of the ancient Kamo clan, with the Upper and Lower Kamo Shrines in Kyoto tracing their roots here. The shrine grounds, surrounded by deep forest, feature crystalline air, and the vermillion main hall is a Muromachi-period structure designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Trees reflect in the pond before the shrine buildings, creating a landscape where time seems to pause. Spring brings approximately 500 varieties of Japanese primrose blossoms to the grounds, creating an especially vibrant season. Located at the southern terminus of the old Katsuragi Road, it serves as a perfect final station—a fitting conclusion to a day of mountain and countryside walking, where you can deeply savor the profound quietness of a place of prayer spanning ancient times.
Tips
Car travel is convenient, with free parking near the torii gate. By public transport, take a bus from Kintetsu Gojo Station heading toward Gojo; get off at Kazeno-mori (風の森) and walk about 15 minutes. The shrine grounds feature stone steps and gravel paths, so hiking shoes are fine. The adjacent Katsuragi Old Road History and Culture Museum offers insights into the road's heritage.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes. Late afternoon's slanting light beautifully illuminates the forest and shrine buildings.
