On the night of the Ansei Nankai Earthquake, Hamaguchi Goryo set fire to his own rice sheaves to guide villagers toward higher ground through the darkness. The Inamura no Hi Museum, comprising the Hamaguchi Goryo Memorial Hall and Tsunami Disaster Prevention Education Center, was built at his childhood home to convey his life and disaster prevention wisdom. In an impressive 3D tsunami video theater, experience the threat of tsunamis, then trace the story of the Hiro Village Levee, which Goryo built with private funds and villagers together. You'll realize that "Inamura no Hi" was not merely a night's good deed but a practical endeavor looking ahead to recovery and preparations for a century hence. Hamaguchi Goryo, the 7th generation head of Yamasa Soy Sauce, left a footprint that overlaps with the history of this soy sauce town, leaving a deep resonance as you conclude your couple's town walk.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Yuasa town center, or approximately 20 minutes' walk from JR Yuasa Station. Free parking is available. Upon entry, confirm the screening times for the 3D tsunami video theater and plan your exhibit tour accordingly for efficiency. The displays contain content worth reading carefully, so allow sufficient time. If energy permits, walking to and from the nearby National Historic Site of Hiro Village Levee that Goryo built is also recommended.
