Designed by architect I.M. Pei, known for the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum, this museum opened in the mountains of Shigaraki in 1997. Taking inspiration from Tao Yuanming's "Record of Peach Blossom Spring," the dramatic approach—passing through a tunnel and suspension bridge before the building suddenly appears—is like a journey to paradise itself. Most of the building is buried underground to protect the landscape, and the glass roof allows natural light to flood the entrance hall, offering views of Shigaraki's mountain ridges beyond. For architecture lovers, it's positively spine-tingling. The collection focuses on ancient art from around the world—ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Western Asia, and China—and the collection's high quality is well-regarded internationally. Tips
From JR Biwako Line Ishiyama Station, take Teisan Bus for approximately 50 minutes; by car, about 15 minutes from Shinmeishin Shigaraki IC with free parking available. From the reception building to the museum building is about 8 minutes on foot, including a tunnel, and electric cart shuttle service is also available. Operating on a seasonal basis in spring, summer, and autumn with winter closure, so be sure to check the official website's opening calendar in advance.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 2 hours. Early morning right after opening is quietest, and you can photograph the tunnel and suspension bridge with fewer crowds.
