Cross the suspension bridge Hora no Miya Bridge to an ancient temple. End your day in the quiet temple grounds

About this spot

An ancient temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect said to have been the temporary imperial residence "Hora Palace" of Emperor Junin during the Nara period. The approach crossing the suspension bridge "Hora no Miya Bridge" spanning the Odo River to the temple grounds is rare throughout Japan, with the river surface and Shigaraki's mountain village landscape views unique to this temple. In stark contrast to lively tourist spots, the temple grounds are enveloped by trees and serenely quiet. After a day immersed in the lingering beauty of art and pottery from visiting museums and kilns, you can spend a contemplative closing time in the pure mountain air, settling your heart. The convenient location near Shigaraki Kogen Railway's Tamagawa Temple Station makes it accessible even for those traveling by train. The sunset landscape viewed from beyond the crossed suspension bridge is the day's most serene and spectacular scenery.

Tips

About 5 minutes walk from Shigaraki Kogen Railway's Tamagawa Temple Station via the pedestrian suspension bridge Hora no Miya Bridge. Visiting is free, and car access is also available. The suspension bridge is for pedestrians with magnificent views, but those uncomfortable with heights can cross slowly near the railings. The foothills see early sunset, so complete your visit while there's still daylight.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 40 minutes. Late afternoon before sunset is quietest and most fitting for the day's conclusion.
