Leisurely view the nationally designated scenic garden at the state guesthouse that welcomed Emperor Meiji
About this spot
Built in 1887 with private funds invested by local businessman Asami Matazō of Nagahama to welcome Emperor Meiji's imperial visit, this state guesthouse was named by Itō Hirobumi. The main hall, built entirely of Japanese cypress, embodies the dignified character of Meiji-era architecture, and the borrowed scenery view of Lake Biwa and Mount Ibuki beyond the garden is magnificent. The highlight is the pool-and-stream strolling garden designed by Ogawa Jihei VII, a pioneer of modern Japanese garden design, and is designated as a national scenic site—a genuine masterpiece. The grand vista woven together by lawn, massive boulders, and a pond will calm your spirit before beginning a day of food tours. From mid-January through early March each year, Japan's largest potted plum blossom exhibition is held, famous for ancient plum trees hundreds of years old filling the entire building. With its convenient location just steps from Nagahama Station, this venue is the perfect starting point for your castle town gourmet tour.
Tips
About 3 minutes walk west of JR Nagahama Station, across from Nagahama Railway Square. Admission is 300 yen for adults (special admission rates apply during the potted plum blossom exhibition). The garden has gravel walkways and stepping stones, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Arriving right when the building opens means fewer crowds and plenty of time for leisurely garden photography.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes required. Early morning after opening has fewer visitors, allowing you to enjoy the quiet garden at a relaxed pace.
