An ancient temple of Yunoyama Hot Spring said to have been founded in 807 by Great Master Dengyo Saicho. During the Sengoku period it was known for its many warrior-monks and was destroyed by Oda Nobunaga's forces before being rebuilt in the Yunoyama Hot Spring area. The temple grounds preserve the romantic "folded-crane legend" associated with romantic fulfillment, and visitors continue the tradition of dedicating origami cranes with wishes—the sight of colorful cranes adorning the temple is irresistibly photogenic. The temple is also connected to the "Warrior-Monk Festival" (僧兵まつり), a vigorous autumn event held in the hot spring town. The quiet grounds above the town offer a serene setting for families to offer prayers together for safe travels and good health. Folding cranes with children before dedicating them becomes a treasured travel memory.
Tips
A short walk from the Yunoyama Onsen bus stop. Stone steps lead to the temple, so a baby carrier is safer than a stroller for small children. Admission is free. Bringing origami paper and folding cranes together with children is highly recommended. The hot spring town has narrow streets in places, so park at lodges or public parking and explore on foot.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Early afternoon offers a quiet, leisurely atmosphere for prayer.
