Stroll through a scenic landscape of massive boulders and pristine waters along the Mitaki River; savor hot spring town charm

About this spot

A natural park sprawling along the Mitaki River (三滝川) flowing through Yunoyama Hot Spring Town, named for the massive granite boulder "Oishi" (大石) resting in the river. This boulder, also called "Japan's Greatest Stone," is matched in scale only by Gozaisho Peak itself. The gorge formed by this impressive boulder and crystal-clear waters represents one of Yunoyama's signature scenic spots. Leisurely riverside walks allow visitors to enjoy the atmospheric wisps of hot spring steam mixed with the soothing sound of rushing water—adults find respite while children become captivated by the rocks and riverside exploration. Spring greenery and autumn foliage are especially stunning, making it popular for family photos. The park's free admission and easy accessibility midway through a hot spring town stroll make it an ideal three-generation outing spot.

Tips

A short walk from the hot spring town center along the Mitaki River. The grounds have slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The riverbank has scattered rocks; keep watch on children near the water. Weekday afternoons are quieter than holidays and peak seasons. Pair the visit with Sangaku-ji Temple for a comprehensive hot spring town experience.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Soft afternoon light creates beautiful landscape photos.
