A brilliantly blue pond created by water accumulation behind a dam built on the Biei River during disaster prevention work on Tokachi Dake. The pond's striking cobalt blue color is thought to result from groundwater containing aluminum from upstream—including Shiragehige Falls—mixing with the river water, creating microscopic particles that scatter sunlight and give the water its distinctive hue. The ethereal landscape of standing dead larch trees rising from the water's surface became world-famous after being featured as a computer wallpaper, and is now one of Hokkaido's signature scenic spots. The water's blue tone constantly shifts with light, season, and weather; windless mornings when the surface becomes mirror-like are particularly rewarding. A walking path runs along the pond, allowing you to adjust your angle and search leisurely for your perfect shot.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Biei Station, located along Doudo Route 966 with a paid parking lot. The area gets crowded with tour buses during midday, so arriving early is recommended. The walking path has gravel surfaces, so wear comfortable shoes. Facilities like a shop and restroom are concentrated near the parking area.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Calm, clear mornings offer the best mirror-like water conditions. Visit during early morning hours before tour buses arrive for a peaceful experience.
