View the Rare Subterranean Waterfall Cascading from the Lava Cliff from the Bridge

A waterfall with a drop of approximately 30 meters viewed from the bridge crossing the Biei River at the edge of the Shirogane hot spring town. Rather than flowing from the river above, this water emerges as groundwater from cracks in the lava layer and flows down the cliff face—a rare type called a "subterranean waterfall." The appearance of white threads flowing from various points in the rock face inspired its name, likening it to an old man's white beard. The Biei River where it falls, affectionately called the "Blue River," has a whitish-blue hue, and the contrast between white falls, blue river, and cliff greenery creates an almost painted landscape. The minerals dissolved in this water downstream create the distinctive blue of the Blue Pond—seeing this water's origin is part of the experience. The bridge provides the viewing point, allowing you to carefully compose your shots.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Shirogane Blue Pond. There is a tourist information center and parking area at the base of the Blue River Bridge (ブルーリバー橋) that overlooks the falls. Wind from the river can be cool even in summer, so bring a light layer. Keep a safe distance from the railing and watch your footing while photographing.
