Capture the Famous Poplar Single Tree Alongside the Patchwork Hills
About this spot
A notably tall single poplar tree standing in the rolling hills of northwestern Biei's Patchwork Road. Named after the car television commercial series "Ken and Mary" in which it appeared, it has since become a defining landscape of Biei's hill-viewing experience. Standing against blue skies amid wheat and sugar beet fields, its silhouette changes dramatically with season and time of day, and photography enthusiasts love it for the endlessly fresh shots it yields on each visit. The area immediately surrounding the tree is private farmland where entry is strictly forbidden, but the composition is compelling enough from the roadside alone. Nearby scattered trees such as Seven Stars Tree and Parent-Child Tree offer additional photo opportunities—if time permits, driving between them and comparing shots is a fun way to spend your time.
Tips
About 5 minutes by car from Biei Station; roughly 25 minutes from Shikisai no Oka via the hill roads. A parking area is provided near the tree. The surrounding fields are private farmland—never enter them. Avoid parking on the roadside and driving onto farm roads; respect local customs while photographing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. Afternoon light from the west makes the rolling hills appear three-dimensional and highlights the poplar's silhouette.
