Preparing for Nature Observation with Marimo and Akan Forest Exhibits - Free Admission Visitor Center

About this spot

An environmental ministry visitor center at the gateway to Akan-Mashū National Park, introducing the natural beauty of Akan's forest and lake in an easy-to-understand manner. Inside, there is an exhibition tank for the Special Natural Monument marimo, where you can observe the undulating green spheres in detail through glass. The center also features tanks of Akan Lake fish including kokanee salmon, displays about the origins of Mount Meakan and Mount Oakan, and exhibits of brown bears and Hokkaido sika deer that inhabit the forest. It is perfect for the whole family to prepare for the lakeside nature you'll soon explore. The wooden interior maintains warmth and has an unhurried design that allows both grandparents and grandchildren to explore at their own pace. The Bokke Walking Trail extends from the back, making it convenient to depart on a forest stroll while looking for the animals you learned about in the exhibits.

Tips

Located east of the Akan Lake hot spring town, about a 10-minute walk from Akan Lake Bus Center. Admission is free and visitors can tour the interior in shoes. Since there are closed days, confirm the opening schedule before planning your itinerary. Information about the Bokke Walking Trail conditions and brown bear sightings is provided at the center, so stopping by before your walk offers peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. Early morning, right after opening, is quiet and perfect for reviewing before your walking trail.
