Forest Stroll to the Mud Volcano "Bokke" Where Hot Mud Bubbles
About this spot
A nature trail extending through primeval forest from behind the Akan Lake Eco-Museum Center, where the mud volcano called "Bokke" awaits at its end. The name Bokke derives from the Ainu word "Pohke" (bubbling), and the sight of hot mud bubbling up from underground with steam is a powerful reminder that the Earth is alive. In the forest of Sakhalin spruce and Mongolian oak, you may encounter Japanese squirrels and great spotted woodpeckers, and listening carefully you'll hear the voices of wild birds. Reaching the lakeside reveals Mount Oakan standing tall ahead, with a landscape representative of Lake Akan spreading before you. The trail is mostly level and takes about an hour to complete leisurely, making it an ideal morning stroll for grandchildren and grandparents to enjoy nature observation together.
Tips
The entrance is behind the Eco-Museum Center; the circling course around the lake takes about an hour of leisurely walking. The path is mostly flat but is a dirt trail, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The area around Bokke is extremely hot mud, so view it from outside the fence and keep small children in sight at all times. Insect repellent is recommended during summer months.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. The crisp morning air makes it easier to encounter wild birds and squirrels.
