A scenic masterpiece of the Sanriku coast where towering cliffs approximately 200 meters high stretch roughly 8 kilometers, marked by dramatic rock formations and sea caves. This grand landscape of precipitous cliffs and boulder-strewn shoreline earns the poetic title "Alps of the Sea," with the vivid contrast between the Pacific's blue and the cliff-face green breathtaking in its majesty. The park features three observation decks; the First Observation Deck offers a sweeping multi-layered panorama of the cliffside, while the Second Observation Deck, accessed by descending stairs, provides an even closer perspective of the cliffs' imposing scale. In early summer, delicate white rhododendrons adorn the nature path, and on some days, sea fog drapes the cliffs in enchanting mist. A restaurant house at the observation deck entrance offers fresh seafood meals and soft serve ice cream for a refreshing break. Standing side by side gazing across the vast ocean, the effort to travel all the way to Sanriku feels profoundly worthwhile.
Tips
About 15 minutes by car from Tanohata Station; free parking is available. The descent to the Second Observation Deck involves hundreds of stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Sea winds are strong and temperatures cool even in summer, so bring a light jacket. Lunch at the restaurant house near the observation deck entrance is convenient.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours (including lunch). Morning to midday offers the best viewing, when sunlight makes the sea brilliantly blue.
