The name derives from cormorants (umi-u) that nest in the cliff face. After a pleasant 10-minute walk along a pine-forest nature path from the parking area, the vista suddenly unfolds—the massive cliffs and Pacific Ocean burst into view in a breathtaking reveal. From the observation deck, you gaze upon the bow-shaped succession of cliffs and the white-capped coastline below. Fewer visitors arrive here compared to Kitayamazaki, allowing for a quiet communion with the sublime landscape; only the sound of waves and wind through the pines fill the air. While sharing the same cliff-formed beauty, Unopike offers a distinctly different composition from Kitayamazaki, and viewing both deepens your appreciation of the Rias coast's grand scale.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Kitayamazaki; free parking is available. The walk from the parking area to the observation deck follows a flat, wooded nature path of roughly 10 minutes. No shops are present, so bring your own drinks. During bug season, insect repellent enhances comfort. Never cross beyond the observation deck's railing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. In the afternoon, light casts rich shadows across the cliffs. Late afternoon, when fewer visitors are present, offers an especially peaceful experience.
