View a Glacial-Age Forest and Paleolithic Campfires Underground

About this spot

A world-class rarity—a museum that preserves and displays a glacial-age forest from approximately 20,000 years ago, discovered underground in a residential area of Nagamachi, Sendai. Officially known as Sendai City Tomizawa Ruins Preservation Museum. Descending into the underground exhibition room, you'll see the preserved remains of a glacial conifer forest exactly as it was excavated: fallen trunks and tree stumps, alongside the remnants of a Paleolithic campfire. Imagining hunters resting here 20,000 years ago sends chills down both children's and adults' spines. An outdoor "Glacial Age Forest" recreates ice-age plants, and combined with the exhibits, you can experience ancient Sendai with all your senses. An intellectually stimulating spot to wrap up your day, filling travel-weary minds with the romance of prehistoric times.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Yagiyama. By train, take the Subway Tōzai Line combined with bus or walking—about 15 minutes on foot from Nagamachi Minami Station on the Subway Namboku Line. Closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). The underground exhibition room is cool, so bring a light jacket even in summer. Admission closes 30 minutes before closing time, so plan to arrive with time to spare.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon before closing is relatively quiet, letting you savor the atmospheric dimly lit exhibition room.
