Gateway to Gorge Strolling - Preview Highlights with Exhibits and Maps
About this spot
A hub facility for exploring Oirase Gorge, located at the Yakeyama entrance of the gorge. In addition to exhibits introducing the formation of the gorge and its flora and fauna, there's a corner where you can closely observe the moss world, which is synonymous with Oirase. Stopping by before setting out dramatically changes how you experience the gorge. The museum also houses a café and shop featuring popular drinks made with Oirase spring water and local souvenirs. It's also a rental bicycle hub, and you can get the latest information such as hiking maps and current trail conditions. After using the restroom and discussing with family which sections to walk based on everyone's pace, this is the perfect reliable starting point.
Tips
About 40 minutes by car from Towada city center; accessible by Oirase-gou JR bus from Aomori or Hachinohe stations. Since parking is limited along the gorge, it's safer to park near Yakeyama in the morning. There are few restrooms in the gorge, so be sure to use the facilities here before departure.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Stop by first thing to gather information. Early morning hours are quiet with fewer crowds in the gorge.
