A Scenic Masterpiece Representing Oirase Gorge - White Surging Rapids up Close

About this spot

The most spectacular scenic spot on Oirase Gorge, appearing most frequently in posters and tourism photographs. True to its name, the flow surges fiercely white with spray, gnawing at moss-covered rocks, leaving a striking impression amid the gentle babbling streams of Oirase. The hiking trail passes right beside the flow, allowing you to feel the water sounds and spray throughout your body. Surrounded by beech and Japanese catalpa forests, the contrast between the white water and tree colors is magnificent during the new green or autumn foliage seasons. Being close to the road means you can enjoy the highlights of the gorge without walking long distances. The site is a paradise for photography enthusiasts who set up tripods for long-exposure shots.

Tips

From the Oirase Gorge Museum, head upstream along the road and walk from Ishigato Rest Area. The trail is slippery with tree roots and wet rocks, so wear sturdy shoes. Water spray may reach you, so handle cameras and smartphones carefully.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Morning light filters through the flow, making the white spray glow even more brilliantly.
