The Only Waterfall on the Main Stream - A Spectacular Wide Water Curtain

About this spot

Standing about 7 meters high and 20 meters wide, this is the only waterfall on the main stream of Oirase Gorge and one of the gorge's most spectacular sights. The water curtain spreading the full width as it falls is wonderfully dramatic, and as you approach, you're enveloped in thunderous roar and mist, cool even on hot days. Known by the alternate name "Fish-Blocking Falls" because it has long prevented fish passage upstream, it's deeply connected to the history of Towada Lake having no fish until Holokikari char were introduced. A hiking trail leads right to the foot of the waterfall, making it easy to take souvenir photos up close. With good access from the road and short walking distance, it's an easy stop for three-generation family trips—the climax of exploring Oirase.

Tips

Accessible from Asura's Flow by both hiking trail and road. The area near the falls is slippery with water mist, so use handrails where available. By bus, Choushi Falls Bus Stop is right beside the falls, minimizing walking distance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. After snowmelt or rain, water volume increases for dramatic impact. Around midday, light reaches the falls, creating great photos.
