A Renaissance-Style White Mansion: Tracing the Prosperity of the Mining Town at Kosaka Mining Office

Built in Meiji 38 (1905), this is the office building of the Kosaka Mining operation and, alongside Korakukan Theatre, a symbol of Kosaka. It is designated a National Important Cultural Property. This three-story wooden Renaissance-style white mansion features a graceful entrance portico and spiral staircase spanning the atrium that takes your breath away. Inside, models and exhibits clearly introduce the history of the Kosaka Mining operation, which once boasted Japan's highest ore output, and the daily life of the town that developed alongside it. There's also a rental experience where families can dress in Meiji-era costumes and take commemorative photos inside the mansion, fun for everyone. Visiting the Rail Park, Korakukan, and this office together tells a unified narrative of Japan's Meiji modernization built on mining wealth.
Tips
Just a short walk from Korakukan along Meiji Centennial Street. A combination ticket with Korakukan is a good value. The building has a restaurant for lunch. The spiral staircase is a popular photo spot, so be considerate when taking turns. Free parking available.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The white walls look most striking against blue skies during the day. If including lunch, dine before the restaurant gets busy.
